Inclusive outdoor environments allow all children to play with their peers. These spaces are not only planned for the physical needs of children, but also are deliberately planned around their social, emotional, and cognitive needs. 

Planning for inclusive playgrounds requires a team approach. Whether planning an entire new playground or modifying an existing area, assure the planning team includes educators, administrators, maintenance personnel, a nurse, and, most importantly, parents of children with differing abilities.

There is a planning element to the physical equipment, such as accessible swings, tunnels, and other play components, but environmental factors (e.g. sun exposure, hazardous materials, chemicals, hot materials) are also important.
